Flores has three main airports that matter to travellers: Komodo Airport in Labuan Bajo (LBJ) in the far west, H. Hasan Aroeboesman Airport in Ende (ENE) on the central south coast, and Frans Seda Airport in Maumere (MOF) in the east. As of 2026, Labuan Bajo carries the bulk of traffic with direct jets from Bali and Jakarta, while Ende and Maumere are mostly served by turboprops via Kupang. The smartest way to use the Flores airports is an open-jaw ticket — fly into one end of the island, travel the Trans-Flores Highway overland, and fly out of the other end without backtracking.

What Are the Three Main Flores Airports?

Each airport serves a different section of the island, and the distances between them are far bigger than most first-time visitors expect. Driving from Labuan Bajo to Maumere takes roughly two full days on the winding Trans-Flores Highway, which is exactly why choosing the right arrival and departure airport shapes your whole trip.

Labuan Bajo (LBJ) is the gateway for Komodo National Park and the only Flores airport with frequent jet service. It sits practically on top of the town — most harbour hotels are a 10–15 minute drive away. Ende (ENE) is the most convenient airport for Kelimutu, since Moni village is only about 50 km away. Maumere (MOF) serves east Flores, including Sikka’s weaving villages and the dive resorts along Maumere Bay, and is roughly a three-hour drive from Moni.

Which Airlines Fly to Flores?

As of 2026, Labuan Bajo is served by a rotating mix of Indonesian carriers — typically including Garuda Indonesia, Batik Air, Citilink, Super Air Jet and Wings Air — with multiple daily flights from Bali (about 1 hour 10 minutes) and direct services from Jakarta (about 2 hours 40 minutes). Ende and Maumere are mainly connected by Wings Air ATR turboprops through Kupang in Timor, which itself links to Bali, Jakarta and Surabaya.

Two honest warnings from years of running trips here. First, schedules on the Ende and Maumere routes change often and flights are sometimes consolidated or cancelled at short notice, so always recheck timetables close to your travel date. Second, morning flights are more reliable than afternoon ones across all Flores airports — weather builds over the mountains after midday, especially outside the May–October dry season. Build at least one buffer day into any itinerary that connects a small-airport flight to an onward international departure or a scheduled Komodo boat.

Labuan Bajo Airport Transfer: Getting from LBJ to Town and Harbour

A Flores island airport transfer in Labuan Bajo is short and simple: the terminal sits about two kilometres from the main street, and virtually every hotel is within 15 minutes. Options, with indicative 2026 prices:

• Airport taxi counter: fixed-price coupons to town, typically around IDR 100,000–150,000.
• Hotel pickup: many mid-range and upscale hotels include this or charge IDR 100,000–250,000.
• Pre-arranged private car with driver: around IDR 200,000–300,000, worth it if you are heading straight to the harbour for a boat departure with luggage and dive gear.

Prices are indicative and move with fuel costs and season — treat them as a planning range, not a quote, and confirm current rates before you travel. If you are landing and boarding a Komodo boat the same day, aim for a flight that arrives before 10:00 so a delay does not cost you the first day of your cruise. Better still, arrive the evening before; Labuan Bajo has enough waterfront restaurants and viewpoints to fill an afternoon easily.

Ende Airport Transfer to Moni and Kelimutu

Ende’s airport sits right inside town — you can reach most Ende hotels in five to ten minutes for roughly IDR 50,000–100,000 by taxi or ojek arrangement. The transfer most travellers actually need, though, is the Ende airport transfer to Moni, the village at the foot of Kelimutu where everyone overnights before the sunrise crater-lake visit.

• Private car with driver, Ende airport to Moni: around IDR 500,000–800,000 for the car (not per person), taking 1.5–2 hours over a scenic mountain road.
• Public transport: local buses and shared cars run the Ende–Moni road for a fraction of the price, but they leave when full, take longer, and are awkward with luggage.

If your flight lands in Ende by early afternoon, you can comfortably reach Moni before dark, sleep early, and be at the Kelimutu viewpoint for sunrise the next morning — the lakes are at their clearest in the first hours after dawn, particularly in the dry months from May to October.

Maumere Airport Transfer: Town, Moni and East Flores

Frans Seda Airport is about ten minutes from Maumere town; a taxi or arranged car costs roughly IDR 50,000–100,000. For travellers using Maumere as their Kelimutu gateway, the Maumere airport transfer to Moni is a longer haul: around 90–100 km and three hours of driving, with private cars typically charging IDR 800,000–1,000,000 (again, indicative — confirm current rates).

Why choose Maumere over Ende at all? Three reasons: flight availability on any given date is sometimes better; east Flores adds worthwhile stops such as the ikat-weaving villages of Sikka and the beaches of Paga along the coastal road to Moni; and starting in Maumere gives you the longest possible west-bound overland route, covering the entire island end to end.

How Does the Fly-In, Fly-Out (Open-Jaw) Strategy Work?

Because the Trans-Flores Highway is a single winding spine, driving back to your arrival airport wastes one to two full days. The open-jaw strategy fixes this: book your inbound flight to one of the eastern Flores airports and your outbound from Labuan Bajo, or the reverse. The classic overland route — Labuan Bajo, Ruteng and the UNESCO-recognized traditional village of Wae Rebo, Bajawa’s Ngada villages and hot springs, Ende, then Kelimutu from Moni — takes four to six days in either direction.

Our recommended direction for most travellers is east to west: fly into Ende or Maumere, see Kelimutu first, then travel through Bajawa, Ruteng and Wae Rebo toward Labuan Bajo, and finish with a Komodo National Park boat trip before flying out of LBJ. What About the Smaller Airports at Ruteng and Bajawa?

Flores also has small airstrips at Ruteng (Frans Sales Lega) and Bajawa (Soa), but as of 2026 scheduled service on both is limited and changes frequently — some seasons they have connections via Kupang, other seasons nothing at all. We do not recommend building an itinerary around them. Treat the three main Flores airports — Labuan Bajo, Ende and Maumere — as your dependable entry and exit points, and cover Ruteng and Bajawa by road, which is where the island’s best scenery is anyway.

Practical Tips Before You Book

• Book LBJ flights early in high season (July–August and around holidays); Labuan Bajo flights sell out well before Ende or Maumere ones do.
• Carry cash for transfers at Ende and Maumere — card payment is rare outside Labuan Bajo, and ATMs at the small airports are unreliable.
• Do not book same-day international connections off any Flores flight; overnight in Bali or Jakarta instead.
• Travel May to October if you can — the dry season means clearer Kelimutu views, calmer Komodo seas and fewer weather-related flight disruptions.
