Komodo Diving Liveaboard Trips and Dive Sites
Sleeping at the site is what buys the early slack-current window. Castle Rock, Crystal Rock, Batu Bolong and Manta Point, on the tide rather than on a day boat’s timetable.

Why sleep aboard
The slack window is the whole argument
Komodo’s best sites sit in current. The diveable window at Castle Rock or Crystal Rock is short and tied to the tide, and it often falls before a day boat from Labuan Bajo could get there.
A liveaboard is already at anchor. That converts a two-hour commute into a briefing on deck, and it is the reason experienced divers book the boat rather than the day trip.
It also makes three to four dives a day realistic, including a dusk or night dive, without the fatigue of two long crossings.

Site access is decided by tide and swell on the day. A good dive guide will move the plan rather than push a group into current it cannot hold.

Both are world-class. They are not interchangeable, and the deciding factor is usually logistics.

For a first Indonesian liveaboard, Komodo is the easier answer: closer, shorter, cheaper to reach, and the passages between sites are short.
Gear
What to bring, and what to rent
Rental is available on every reputable boat, but fit is personal.
Confirm before you pay:
Whether nitrox is available and at what cost, how many tanks per day are included, whether a dive guide is per group or per diver, and what happens to your fee if swell closes a site.
- Bring your own mask — fit is the one piece rental rarely gets right.
- Bring a computer if you own one, and a surface marker buoy: both are effectively mandatory in current.
- Rent BCD, regulator and tanks unless you dive often enough to justify carrying them.
- A 3mm wetsuit is usually enough; the south of the park runs cooler than the north.
- Reef hooks are used at some sites — ask whether the boat carries them.
- A torch for the dusk dive, if the itinerary includes one.

Mixed groups work, with one condition
Non-divers snorkel the same sites and go ashore for the dragon walks and Padar. The condition is a boat with enough tenders that snorkellers are not waiting on the dive schedule.

Do I need a certification?
For the signature sites, yes — and real current experience, not just the card. Beginners can dive Pink Beach reef, Siaba and Sabolan, and some boats run courses aboard.
How many dives per day?
Three is standard, four on some itineraries including a dusk dive. The tide, not the schedule, decides the times.
What is the best time of year to dive Komodo?
April to November for the calmest water and best visibility. Manta sightings are good much of the year; plankton-rich months can mean more mantas but less clarity.
What is the water temperature?
Roughly 26–29°C in the north and cooler in the south, where upwelling brings colder water. A 3mm suit covers most of it.
What marine life should I expect?
Reef manta rays, reef sharks, schooling trevally and tuna, turtles, and dense soft coral. Macro diving around Flores adds nudibranchs, frogfish and pygmy seahorses.
How does weather affect site access?
Swell closes the exposed pinnacles first. A good guide moves the plan to sheltered sites rather than pushing a group into conditions it cannot hold.
Is macro diving good here?
Yes, particularly around Siaba, Sabolan and the Flores coast. It is the counterweight to the big-fish sites and often the better photography.
What does a dive liveaboard cost?
Priced like any liveaboard — per person for a shared cabin, per boat for a charter — with tanks, weights and the dive guide either bundled or itemised. Ask which.
