What it is
The boat is the hotel
A liveaboard sleeps you aboard, so the boat moves between sites while you are eating or asleep instead of running back to Labuan Bajo every evening. That is the whole advantage: the hours a day trip spends commuting become water time.
It also reaches the early-morning slack-current windows that day boats from the harbour usually miss — which matters at Manta Point, and matters a great deal to divers.
Cabins range from bunk rooms shared with strangers to master suites with a full ensuite. The cabin decides the price far more than the itinerary does.

Komodo is a short-passage park: sites sit close together, so extra nights buy depth rather than distance. That is the real difference from Raja Ampat.

What to verify with any operator
Boat quality varies widely in this fleet. These are the questions that separate them.
Also worth asking:
Environmental practice — waste handling, mooring rather than anchoring on coral, and whether the crew brief guests on reef contact. Operators who have thought about it answer immediately.
- Safety equipment: life jackets for every berth, a working radio, and a tender that runs.
- Crew-to-guest ratio, and whether a dedicated guide sails with the boat.
- A written itinerary, including what happens if swell closes a site.
- Whether park entry and conservation fees are inside the quoted price or added later.
- Cabin photographs of the actual vessel, not a class illustration.
- How meals work — most boats serve three a day plus water, with drinks charged separately.

How much is a Komodo liveaboard?
From about USD 300 per person for a shared cabin. Private charters are priced per boat per night, from around USD 1,800 for a boutique phinisi and USD 5,300 for entry-luxury vessels.
Will I get seasick?
Komodo is mostly sheltered water with short passages, and boats anchor in bays overnight, so it is calmer than an open-ocean crossing. Bring tablets if you are prone to it and take them before boarding, not after.
What meals are served?
Three a day plus drinking water, usually Indonesian and Western dishes cooked aboard. Dietary requirements are workable with notice. Alcohol and soft drinks are charged separately.
Komodo or Raja Ampat?
Komodo is closer, shorter and cheaper to reach, with short passages between sites. Raja Ampat is further, longer and richer in biodiversity. For a first Indonesian liveaboard, Komodo is the easier answer.
Can solo travellers join?
Yes. Bunks in shared cabins sell individually on open-trip departures, which avoids a single supplement.
What season is best?
April to November. Calm seas, good visibility and reliable sailing. December to March can shorten or reroute itineraries around swell.
What should I pack?
Soft bag rather than a hard case, quick-dry towel, reef-safe sunscreen, a light layer for the night deck, a torch, and motion-sickness tablets.
What are the liveaboard regulations?
Park entry and conservation fees are government-set and enforced, mooring rules apply at several sites, and vessel safety certification is checked. A reputable operator will show you the paperwork.
