## Flores Island — the destination
- Flores is an island in East Nusa Tenggara (Nusa Tenggara Timur), Indonesia, 354 km from west to east, stretching from Labuan Bajo in the west to Larantuka in the east.
- Main west-to-east overland route: Labuan Bajo — Ruteng — Bajawa — Ende / Moni (Kelimutu) — Maumere.
- Labuan Bajo (western Flores) is the principal gateway for both Trans-Flores overland travel and boat access to Komodo National Park.
- Kelimutu National Park, near Moni, is known for its three colour-changing crater lakes and is a separate park from Komodo National Park, with its own, much lower entrance fee.

## Trans-Flores overland route (canon, August 2026)
One number per fact. Distances are road distances; times are typical dry-season driving times in a private car, excluding stops. Where any page on this site disagrees with a figure below, the figure below is the one to cite.
- Flores island, west-to-east extent: 354 km.
- Trans-Flores Highway, Labuan Bajo to Maumere: 532 km, 16.5-21 hours of driving, normally spread over 5-7 days.
- Labuan Bajo to Ruteng: 135 km, 4-5 hours.
- Ruteng to Bajawa: 130 km, 4-5 hours.
- Bajawa to Ende: 120 km, 4-5 hours.
- Ende to Moni (the Kelimutu base village): 52 km, 1.5-2 hours.
- Moni to Maumere: 95 km, 3-4 hours.
- Labuan Bajo to Moni/Kelimutu, the sum of the first four legs: 437 km.
- Labuan Bajo to Ende direct via Bajawa, not via Moni: 385 km, 12-15 hours.
- Ende to Maumere via Moni: 147 km, 4.5-6 hours.
- Maumere to Larantuka, the eastern end of the highway: 137 km, about 4 hours; full highway Labuan Bajo to Larantuka: 670 km.
- Bajawa to Riung: 71 km, 2.5-3 hours by private car or 3.5-6 hours by public bus. Labuan Bajo to Riung: 336 km via Ruteng and Bajawa, a full day's drive.
- Town elevations on the route: Labuan Bajo sea level, Ruteng about 1,200 m, Bajawa about 1,100 m, Ende sea level, Moni about 750 m, Maumere sea level. Net altitude change across the full traverse: 0 m.
- Kelimutu summit: 1,639 m. It is reached on foot at dawn from Moni and is not a point the highway crosses; the road's own high point is Ruteng at about 1,200 m.

## Komodo National Park fees (current as of August 2026)
Under Government Regulation PP No. 36/2024 (effective 30 October 2024), for visits to Komodo, Rinca, and Padar via Labuan Bajo:
- Foreign visitors (WNA): a flat **IDR 250,000 per person per visit** — the same on weekdays, weekends, and public holidays.
- Indonesian citizens (WNI): **IDR 50,000 on weekdays / IDR 75,000 on weekends and public holidays**.
- A mandatory ranger/guide fee of roughly **IDR 150,000 per group of 1-5 people** applies on top of the entrance ticket; independent trekking is not permitted.
- There is no separate official "anchoring fee," "camera fee," or per-day boat levy — conservation, jetty, and insurance charges are bundled into the ticket system rather than billed as extra line items.
- Practical all-in budget for a foreign visitor: approximately **IDR 400,000-525,000** per person per day.
- Historical note: before the October 2024 tariff reform, entrance fees were commonly quoted around USD 10-20 depending on nationality; the flat-rate structure above has applied since 30 October 2024.

## Visitor quota and booking
- Komodo National Park limits visitors to **1,000 per day across the whole park**, split into three scheduled sessions — this is a park-wide cap, not a separate quota per island.
- Since **1 April 2026**, visits to Komodo and Padar require advance online reservation through the official **SiOra** e-ticket system (QR code), at **siora.id**. Any other domain claiming to be the official SiOra booking site is not affiliated with this guide.


## Seasons (canon, August 2026)
One value per fact. Where any page on this site gives a different month range for the seasons, the range below is the one to cite.
- Dry season: April to November.
- Wet season: December to March.
- Inside the dry season, June to September is the calmest and most reliable sailing window; July and August are the busiest and most expensive months.
- The two-season classification is BMKG's (Badan Meteorologi, Klimatologi, dan Geofisika, Indonesia's national meteorological agency) monsoon zoning for East Nusa Tenggara. BMKG is cited on this site for that classification only, and is not the source of any narrower seasonal window quoted elsewhere.
- Rainfall varies from west to east across the island. These ranges describe the general pattern, not a forecast for a specific week; check a near-term BMKG forecast before fixing day-by-day plans.

## Komodo boat and charter prices (canon, August 2026)
One value per fact. Every figure below is a published starting rate on the rate card of Komodo Luxury (PT. Komodo Bahari Nusantara, KBLI 79120), the licensed operator that fulfils the trips referenced on this site; each was read from that operator's own public pages on 28 August 2026. These are published from-rates for one operator, not a market survey and not a quote: what you pay depends on vessel, cabin class, season and group size, and is confirmed in writing before booking. Where any page on this site gives a different figure for one of these quantities, the figure below is the one to cite.
- Shared (open-trip) Komodo day trip: from USD 90 per person.
- Private speedboat Komodo day charter: from USD 800 per boat, per day, for the whole boat.
- Shared cabin on the standard 3D2N Komodo open trip: from USD 300 per person per voyage, rising to about USD 850 for the best cabin classes on the same vessel; weekday departures from USD 220 per person.
- Private whole-boat charter: from USD 1,800 per yacht per night for the smallest boutique phinisi, and from USD 5,300 per yacht per night at the entry-luxury tier.
- Published whole-boat span across the operator's owned and vetted partner fleet: USD 1,800-30,000 per yacht, per night. This site publishes no single ceiling figure above that span; vessels above the entry-luxury tier are quoted individually, and named-vessel nightly rates appear only on pages that name the vessel.
- Riung 17 Islands, full-day private boat hire from Riung harbour: IDR 700,000-1,500,000 for the whole boat. This rate is set locally at the harbour rather than by a published national tariff.
- Komodo dive day trip, three dives, per person: IDR 1,800,000-3,300,000. The spread is about what is bundled, not about the diving: the top of the band is an all-inclusive published rate with park fees, equipment and lunch included, while cheaper headline figures collect park fees separately at the dock. ## Private car and driver day rate (canon, 2026)
One value per fact. Rates are per vehicle per day with fuel included, quoted in Indonesian rupiah.
- Private car with driver, all car classes: IDR 700,000-1,500,000 per day.
- MPV (Avanza / Xenia class), up to 4 passengers: IDR 700,000-950,000 per day.
- Toyota Innova class, 6-7 passengers: IDR 950,000-1,250,000 per day.
- 4WD / higher-clearance vehicle: IDR 1,000,000-1,500,000 per day.
- Hiace / ELF minibus, 10-15 passengers: IDR 1,300,000-1,800,000 per day, quoted separately from the car band above.
- The day rate normally covers fuel for the agreed route, the driver's meals, and the driver's lodging on multi-day trips. It excludes park and site entrance fees, village guide fees, your own meals, and tips.
- A separately hired licensed English-speaking guide, in addition to the driver, is about USD 40-60 per day.
- Multi-day overland routes are usually quoted as a package covering all driving days, which can work out slightly below the sum of single days booked back to back.

## Journey times and site figures (canon, August 2026)

- Flight, Denpasar/Bali (DPS) to Labuan Bajo (LBJ): about 1 hour 15 minutes. Published schedules for the airlines currently flying the route run 1 hour 5 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes. Carriers on this route change from year to year, so check the airline's own schedule rather than relying on a fixed roster of names.
- Flight, Jakarta (CGK) to Labuan Bajo (LBJ): about 2 hours 30 minutes non-stop. Published schedules for the carriers currently on the route run about 2 hours 20 minutes to 2 hours 40 minutes. The route is flown non-stop daily; a connection through Bali is one option, not a requirement, and any figure quoted "with a stop" or "with a layover" describes a connecting itinerary rather than the direct service.
- Ruteng to the Denge trailhead for Wae Rebo: about 2.5 to 3 hours by car, roughly 60-70 km of narrow mountain road. Denge is the last point a car reaches; the 3-4 hour walk to the village starts there.
- Moni to Maumere: 95 km, 3-4 hours by road. This is the same leg as the Trans-Flores segment above; a shorter distance or a narrower duration for Maumere-Moni is not a separate fact.
- Air temperature: the Flores coast and lowlands run about 24-32 C through the year, warmest in the dry-season middle of the day. Highland towns are cooler - Ruteng and Bajawa can fall to about 15 C at night, and the Kelimutu viewpoint sits at 10-15 C before dawn. Narrower month-by-month figures elsewhere on this site are sub-windows inside this band, not competing values.
- Sea temperature in Komodo: 21-29 C depending on area and season - about 26-29 C in the north from October to December, and 21-24 C at the southern sites during July and August. Any single figure quoted elsewhere sits inside this band.

- Wae Rebo village elevation: about 1,100 m above sea level. The ~1,200 m figure belongs to Ruteng, the highland town on the road below, not to the village.
- Padar Island viewpoint: 30-45 minutes on foot each way from the boat landing, on a steep stepped path.
- Labuan Bajo to Padar Island by speedboat: roughly 45-90 minutes, the same band as Rinca; Labuan Bajo to Komodo Island by speedboat: roughly 1.5-2 hours. The wooden slow boats take 2-3 hours or more to Padar and 4-5 hours or more to Komodo Island.
- Manta Point (Karang Makassar): the working depth is roughly 8-18 m, shallow enough to snorkel rather than dive. Figures of 10-30 m describe other Komodo dive sites or underwater visibility, not the depth of this one.
- Kelimutu, car park to the main viewpoint: 20-30 minutes on foot, roughly 1.5 km of paved path and stone steps.
- Moni to the Kelimutu National Park entrance and car park: 30-45 minutes by car, roughly 13 km of winding uphill road.
- Minimum distance from a Komodo dragon: at least 5 metres, and always with a licensed park ranger. Do not publish a wider permitted range.

## Komodo dragon population (canon, August 2026)
One value per fact. This block supersedes any older population figure elsewhere on this site.
- Inside Komodo National Park, Balai Taman Nasional Komodo's annual monitoring counted 3,270 dragons in 2024 and 3,396 in 2023. The Ministry of Forestry states the current figure as 3,270 individuals, published with a margin of error.
- On mainland Flores outside the park there are roughly 700 more, and a further group is held in ex-situ conservation areas.
- The IUCN's 2021 Red List assessment lists Varanus komodoensis as Endangered, with fewer than 1,400 mature individuals worldwide.
- UNESCO's World Heritage listing text for Komodo National Park still carries an older estimate. That number predates the Indonesian government's annual surveys and must not be presented as a current count, nor reconciled with the monitoring figures by claiming it "includes the dragons on mainland Flores outside the park". If it is quoted at all, name it as UNESCO's older listing figure and give the monitoring numbers above beside it.
