What sunrise at the rim actually involves
The gate opens well before dawn. Vehicles climb to a car park, and from there it is a 20–30 minute walk on paved path and around 200 formed stone steps to the main viewpoint — one of the easier walks in the region, but done in the dark.
Mornings at altitude are cold and often windy. A warm layer, a torch and closed shoes matter more than first-time visitors expect. Bring a rain jacket in the wet months.
Mist is the wildcard. On a clear morning all three lakes are visible from the rim, each a different shade depending on mineral and volcanic gas activity monitored by PVMBG. A guide who reads the weather and times your arrival improves the odds — nobody controls the sky, and any operator who promises otherwise is selling you something they cannot deliver.
