Why the road, and not the plane
Flores runs 532 km of winding highway from Labuan Bajo in the west to Maumere in the east. Everything most travellers come for sits inland — the traditional villages, the volcano country, the rice-field amphitheatres, the tri-coloured crater lakes. None of it is near an airport.
One booking settles the logistics: one vehicle, one driver-guide, hotels held in each town, and a pace set by the road rather than by ambition. Mountain driving here averages 30–40 km/h, so honest daily distances matter more than a full-looking itinerary.
The classic run is west to east, finishing on the Kelimutu sunrise and a short flight out of Ende or Maumere. Reversed, it finishes in Labuan Bajo with Komodo National Park and the international connections. The price is the same either way.

Which direction is better — Labuan Bajo to Maumere, or the reverse?
Both work, and the price is identical. West to east ends on the Kelimutu sunrise and a short flight from Ende or Maumere. East to west finishes in Labuan Bajo with Komodo National Park and the international connections.
Is the Wae Rebo trek difficult?
A 3–4 hour uphill forest walk at a relaxed pace, manageable on basic fitness. Porters can carry luggage. You sleep in a traditional mbaru niang — simple mattresses, shared facilities — which is the point of going.
Can this be done as a shared or group tour?
The standard product is private, which the mountain roads and the flexible pacing genuinely require. Solo travellers can ask Komodo Luxury for a single rate or, where timing allows, to join an existing departure. This guide quotes no rates itself.
What is the best season?
April to November is the dry season and the reliable window, especially for the Wae Rebo trek and Kelimutu visibility. December to March is greener but brings rain and occasional landslide delays, so wet-season itineraries carry extra buffer.
How do I get from Labuan Bajo to Kelimutu?
By private car or an organised overland tour — there is no direct flight and no through bus. It is 437 km via Ruteng, Bajawa and Ende, driven over three to five days depending on stops.
How many days for both Komodo and inland Flores?
Six at the minimum, and seven is more comfortable. Most travellers run the overland leg first and return to Labuan Bajo for the boat, or take the boat before heading east.
Are the Komodo park permits complicated?
They need advance coordination with the boat operator. Park entry, anchoring and ranger fees are enforced and revised seasonally, daily visitor numbers are capped, and popular dragon sites can need booking weeks ahead.
What should I check on a Flores boat tour?
Boat quality varies widely. Check the safety equipment, ask for a written itinerary, and confirm whether park entry is included. In high season, June to September, book early.
