Overview
The island, in one page
Flores runs long and narrow, west to east, with a single mountain highway threading its length. Labuan Bajo sits at the western end as the gateway to Komodo National Park; Maumere anchors the east.
Everything most travellers come for sits along that road or just off it: Cancar’s spider-web rice fields, the Wae Rebo cone-house village, the Ngada megalithic villages around Bajawa, and the tri-coloured Kelimutu crater lakes above Moni.
The park is the other half, and it is a boat trip rather than a drive. Padar, the dragon islands, Pink Beach and Manta Point are all reached from Labuan Bajo harbour, which is why most itineraries start or finish there.

The flight decides more of the itinerary than anything else.

About 1 hour 15 minutes non-stop from Denpasar, daily. Ende and Maumere take longer and usually connect.

Decide the direction
West to east finishes on Kelimutu; east to west finishes on Komodo and the international connections.

Book the boat around the flight
Boats board early. A morning arrival gains you a day; an afternoon one loses it.

Leave a buffer
One spare day every three to four active days absorbs a delayed flight or a closed site.
Season
April to November is the reliable window
Best road conditions on the mountain sections, clearer Kelimutu dawns, calmer seas for the boats. December to March is greener but carries rain, higher cloud at the rim and occasional swell reroutes.

How many days do I need in Flores?

How do I get to Flores?
Fly to Labuan Bajo from Denpasar — about 1 hour 15 minutes non-stop. Ende and Maumere are also served but take longer.
Is Flores expensive?
Food and transport are cheap; boats and park fees are not. Budget roughly US$30–150 a day depending on how you travel and which boats you use.
When should I visit?
April to November. July and August are the busiest; September to November is warm, reliable and quieter.
Can I see Komodo dragons and Kelimutu on one trip?
Yes, and it is the standard itinerary. Allow six days minimum, seven comfortably.
Do I need a guide?
For the national park and for Wae Rebo, yes — both are ranger or guide mandated. For the road, a driver-guide is practical rather than required.
Is the overland route safe?
Yes, with sensible pacing. The roads are mountainous and slow rather than dangerous; daily driving is capped at five to six hours for that reason.
What is the one thing people underestimate?
Drive time. A route that looks short on a map is a long day at 30–40 km/h.
